Dorothy Ducummon lives in Tumwater, WA. USA. with her partner Jennifer, and their two teenage daughters. She enjoys waterfall hiking, camping and fishing. She was a reserve police officer for 3 years, and now works as a detention officer. Her goal is to have people realise that everyone deserves equal rights, and to one day, legally marry her partner. – Kel
Love Vs Law…
I was a Reserve Police officer for 3 years and every day that I put on my duty belt and my badge I risked my life to serve and protect my community. I was sworn to uphold the law and that meant a lot to me. I performed these duties with great pride and without receiving any financial gain. I now work as a Detention Officer which is also a high risk job and I am put in serious harm on a daily basis.
My partner is a 911 dispatcher who saves lives daily, a job that is very demanding and stressful. Every day that she goes to work she knows that there could be a chance that an officer who she has worked with will get injured or killed in the line of duty. She was a volunteer fire fighter for several years and has put her life on the line to save people who chose to drive drunk. She is trained to run into burning buildings even though there is a chance she would never come out.
We are a lesbian couple who live together in Tumwater Washington. We risk our lives every day to serve and protect our community. Yet the law gives criminals and even illegal immigrants the right to marry. Yet we are told by our co-workers and even family members that we shouldn’t have the right to marry, even though we are just two people in love.
Love is a powerful thing it can consume you, it can take over all reasoning you may have about things. Love is the most amazing thing I have ever experienced whether it is in marriage or in being a parent. Love makes so many things worth so much more than if there wasn’t any love involved.
Emily Dickinson said it best, “It is better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all.” Amen sister! The funny thing is people thought she was crazy but it sounds to me like she was right on track, and if she was a little crazy I’m okay with that because I love that poem.
Through her writing she has touched me and I bet she felt a lot like me; she just wanted to touch a heart or two. Through my writing, my acceptance and my love I hope to change a heart or two. My goal isn’t to ask you to agree with me or even accept me; it’s to have you realize that we are people too who deserve equal rights.
I say let love drive our society to great heights and not let hate tear us down or apart. Let our love for each other guide us to a better way of life, one that is filled with understanding instead of misunderstanding.
Some Christians and other religious groups are treating gay and lesbians with a lot of hatred. That to me doesn’t show a very Christ like image. We aren’t asking to be married in the church or be accepted by the church. All we are asking for is the right to marry the one we love.
When I die, I and I alone will have to stand before God just like each and every one of us will. I will be judged by Him, not by you but by Him. So let’s leave that job to Him because I’m sure he’s better at it than either of us.
Same sex marriage law should be passed so that each and every one of us has the opportunity to love and marry their best friend. To make a life with their children as a married committed family.
