Why get in? Writing contests are a perfect way not only to hone your writing skills, but to win a writing contest is always good for your portfolio, resume, or CV. Besides, what better theme and platform than the ‘Taboo’ to have fun and demonstrate your abilities!? In addition, Taboo Jive now has a following from over 35 countries and is sure to get you some great exposure!
Rules and Regulations:
1. No entry fee required. Each entrant may submit only one essay per contest.
2. Taboo Jive reserves First Rights on all submissions. All other rights to story submissions remain the property of the author. Entries may not have been previously published in professional media.
3. Story/article Genre: Flash Fiction, 600 – 5,000 words. Any taboo/controversial topic of writer’s choice, either tangentially or directly. If you submit a great story report and don’t win the contest, we may still publish your story as ‘honorable mention’ sometime during the following month.
4. Content rating: ‘PG-13’ to ‘R’ … if you’re using heavy language, please have a point. We understand that sometimes, the most appropriate word to use is “Fuck.” Excessive violence, sex or religious extremism, determined by the judges, will result in disqualification.
5. Tags & titles: Please be sure to include article title and Author name on your piece.
6. Pseudonyms: You may use a pen/ghost name if you choose to remain anonymous.
7. The deadline for story submissions is the 25th of every month at midnight. The winner will be chosen on the last day of every month. We will recognize the winner by publishing the winner’s article on the 1st of the following month. The winner, will of course be contacted by e-mail and paid thru Paypal. If you don’t have a paypal account, you may choose an item (or create your own) from the Taboo Jive Store for equal or lesser value. e.g. bumper sticker, pins, coffee mug, etc…We have only created just a few products so far, so feel free to create your own – it’s easy!
8. All entries must be original works, in English. Plagiarism, which includes the use of third-party poetry, song lyrics, characters or another person’s ideas, without written permission or proper acknowledgment will result in disqualification. The winner will be determined on originality, style, and the piece’s relation to taboo/controversy.
9. All entries are final. No revisions are accepted. The decisions of the judges are entirely their own, and are final.
10. The winner each month will be included in our annual publication “Our 12 best taboo short stories of 2012”

** Also, we will be choosing up to three runner-ups that we will publish one each Saturday from the previous months’ submissions. There is no prize for runner-ups, unless you consider being published as prize enough, which we tend to do. If you do not win and don’t wish your work to be published, though, please specify in your submission email as such.

20 Apr 2012Is murder ok, if it is just insinuated? As in, it isn’t described in detail? I.e. main character is mentally disturbed, is an assassin, has some other kind of issue, etc.
