As a woman who lives in America, the land of the supposed free, it is always amazing to me that it is always men who will never be pregnant or have to worry about the messy entanglement of a unwanted pregnancy because they have the option of walking away, yet are always the main individuals who shout from the rooftops about how wrong abortion is and the rights of the unborn, but do not want to give so much as one used food stamp for the survival of these babies.
Some of these men were foolishly elected to public office by uninformed and biased Americans who voted against their own economic and social interests, and they are now trying to force their narrow viewpoints about female sexuality upon the American public by adding a rider to federal budget negotiations that are currently taking place that would abolish almost 300 million dollars in federal assistance to Planned Parenthood, an organization that helps low-income women with birth control, pap smears and abortion services and counseling (which is not free since it is illegal for the US government to fund abortions) and these negations have almost brought the American government to its knees.
Back story: The US government is facing a shutdown because of budget issues for 2011 as they work out a new budget. Both Republicans and Democrats have not come to an agreement due to the several issues, some of which concern Planned Parenthood, and this might have caused the federal government to stop functioning on April 8, 2011.
Supposedly, negations are taking place to avert this madness, but the last major obstacle to compromise is defunding of Planned Parenthood. The US government was about to shut down because the pandering of certain politicians who are intent on catering to their ignorant, uneducated bias who want women firmly entrenched in the kitchen, barefoot, uneducated, and pregnant without any choices.
In 2011, it is hard to believe that the culture wars are still alive and in full effect; but unfortunately, it is true. Some people are still stupid enough to believe that if government assistance is taken away from Planned Parenthood, women will no longer have any options when it comes to abortion; but that very thought is asinine. It will be more expensive, and if a woman does not want to continue a pregnancy, she will find a way to make it happen. It is better to be safe, than dead or maimed. These same people want to take society back to the 195os when everything supposedly was sunny and bright, but millions of women were miserable in their subordinate lifestyles, taking prescription drugs to be sane, and blacks were beaten within an inch of their lives and water hosed for fighting for their rights to be human.
It sickens me to see that our current elected officials are still on this nonsense during times of economic uncertainty. Will it ever be a time in which women will be able to control their own reproduction in America?
Update: Planned Parenthood was not defunded but the threat to women’s reproduction rights lives on.

21 Apr 2011I didn’t finish this article. I don’t disagree with you, but moral indignation is boring. I am 23 years old and I expect the culture war to be in full swing when I die. Do you remember a time when America was not culturally at war with its self? I don’t, and I’m ok with that. I like the noise of democracy. It is the source of our vitality (and stupidity).
Mainly I just wanted to point out that Jon Kyl is an anagram for “only jk”. So there ya go.

21 Apr 2011I am tired of men trying to control the reproductive rights of women since I am one.

21 Apr 2011It does confuse me that there are women who are anti-abortion.

22 Apr 2011i don’t think they describe themselves as anti-abortion. they’re pro-life, i believe. either way, it doesn’t make much difference to me, since i do tend to agree with mshenry about women having exclusive rights to what happens to their bodies. but it’s not as simple as for abortion and against it, so much as it is a question of individual liberties and the extent we should be allowed to exercise them at the cost of what society might find immoral.

24 Apr 2011Appreciate your perspectives here. The contradictory views are thought-provoking — anti-choice and anti-birth control on one hand and anti-food stamp, anti-child care, anti-affirmative action, anti-fair wages (comparable worth) on the other. Choosing not to look at the realities of pregnancy, childbirth, and childrearing, not to mention widespread violence against women — all related issues. What’s this about, really? Thanks!
