Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Straight Alliance

This week Taboo Jive is recommending a Facebook page that has something for everyone.

About: “Everyone of every sexuality supporting each other. Equality For All! Not Some! Get the latest news and videos here on LGBT issues.”

Mission: “Working for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Equal Rights. One by one we can achieve this.

“Individuals who get involved make all the difference. Whether you join a group, attend an event, speak out against discrimination, intervene to help someone, or lend emotional support to others, you are making the world a better place for everyone.”

Founded in June 2009, the U.S.-based Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Straight Alliance already boasts more than 400,000 members. Like Wipeout Homophobia on Facebook, it appeals to everyone—gay, trans, and straight—which explains its broad appeal.

GLBTSA is one of many groups riding the growing wave for equality. Their info. section includes a short world history of the place of homosexuality in society, including the stark reminder that being gay is still against the law in many parts of the globe.

It goes on to say:
“The most socially acceptable, and probably most widespread, form of hate crime among teenagers and young adults [in the United States] are those targeting sexual minorities. In fact, 75% of students have no state laws to protect them from harassment and discrimination in school based on their sexual orientation and 97% of students report regularly hearing homophobic remarks from their peers. Despite much progress for the LGBT community, there is still a long way to go to truly reach equality.”

Their wall displays a colorful mix of cool graphics, pithy quotes, humor, and breaking stories that appeal to the heart and just plain common sense. By explicitly creating an alliance among people of every sexual stripe, they invite every caring person aboard.

Status update (3/1/12): “There’s no stopping marriage equality now! Bravo for Maryland!”

Status update (10/6/11): “Apple is publicly opposing Proposition 8 and making a donation of $100,000 to the No on 8 campaign. Apple was among the first California companies to offer equal rights and benefits to our employees’ same-sex partners, and we strongly believe that a person’s fundamental rights — including the right to marry — should not be affected by their sexual orientation. Apple views this as a civil rights issue, rather than just a political issue, and is therefore speaking out publicly against Proposition 8.”
– Steve Jobs

May he rest in peace.

A confluence of factors make a page like this the place to be. Marriage equality and LGBT rights are arguably the civil rights issue of our time, and social media make it easy to spread the word and promote the cause fast and easily.

And it is for all these reasons that Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Straight Alliance is our fan page of the week. Please check them out, contribute, and participate in the global conversation about this crucial human rights issue. Together our voices are stronger, and remember, momentum is built by the people, and we are they.
