An estimated one million protesters flood the streets of Cairo as Egyptian protests enter into their fourth day of another massive uprising. The Egyptian military has decided, for now, to promise government control to civilian control by July 1st, 2012 but civilians are demanding that the transaction happen no later than April 1st.
The question is – is civilian control what Egypt REALLY wants right now? Perhaps, but they must be careful not to give back control to the religious fundamentalists that caused the last revolution.
And given the U.S. military’s strong ties and relationship with the Egyptian military – does this mean we may have to intervene if Egypt can’t or won’t protect it’s civilians?
“The Egyptian capital Cairo was the scene of violent chaos on Friday, when tens of thousands of anti-government protesters stoned and confronted police, who fired back with rubber bullets, tear gas and water cannons. It was a major escalation in what was already the biggest challenge to authoritarian President Hosni Mubarak’s 30 year-rule. They are demanding Mubarak’s ouster and venting their rage at years of government neglect of rampant poverty, unemployment and rising food prices.” – Russia Today
